November Reads & December TBR

I hope everyone had a lovely holiday week/weekend last week. If you work retail, I hope you had a smooth Black Friday and that no one gave you any fuss, you’re the real MVP.

If you remember, I decided to try something new by doing a set TBR pile for the month of November. Since I’m such a mood reader and tend to pick up things left and right I thought this would be a great way for me to not get overwhelmed with all of my choices. My first go around of having a set TBR pile went okay. Not perfect, but okay. I ended up DNF-ing three books, finishing two, and ALMOST done with one — any guesses on which one? 😉

What I finished

I listened to the audiobook of Awkward Thoughts of W. Kamau Bell by W. Kamau Bell and loved it! I will post a full review soon so stay tuned.

I also finished One of us is Lying, and was a bit disappointed by it. You can read my full review here

Did Not Finish

Sigh. Outlander is not for me. I tried. I got to about page 70 and could not take it seriously and decided to abandon it. Will I try it again in the future? Probably not. But at least I tried.

Mary Beard’s book, How do We Look was a library book that I had been waiting for for months. With this book, I think I waited for it for too long and by the time I finally got it, I wasn’t in the mood for Mary Beard at the moment. I decided to return it early, and will probably check it out again when I’m in the mood for it – or maybe I will buy it since I know I like her writing.

I decided to check out another audiobook from my library once I finished Awkward Thoughts and decided on We Were Liars. I don’t know if it was the story, the person reading the story, or again if I wasn’t in the mood for it, but I stopped at about 40%. I simply couldn’t connect to any of the characters. Maybe I’m just not meant to like contemporary YA Fiction…?

Gone are the days when I could just sit aimlessly for hours and read non-disturbed. I had planned on finishing this book during my 5-day vacation for Thanksgiving, but sadly I did not. I was simply too busy prepping for the holiday, cooking, and then proceeding to be a couch potato afterwards. We also put up our Christmas tree and decorations. I normally read while the boyfriend watches whatever he wants to on TV, but he actually wanted to watch one of my favorite shows, Midsomer Murders, and I was so surprised I couldn’t say no because it’s rare we want to watch the same thing 😉 .  So we did that for all of Saturday, and on Sunday I did manage to read some of KoA, but I was also prepping for going back to work.

My goal for this last week of November is to play catch up and FINALLY finish this damn book. I’m on page 630, about 63% of the way through. I just need to sit down and commit.

December TBR

I’m hoping with the somewhat success of my November TBR that my December TBR will be even better! Here is what I will be trying to get through in December:

Queen of Air and Darkness by Cassandra Clare
I am SO excited for this release. Cannot wait to read it and one of the reasons why I want to finish KoA so badly.

A Game of Thrones
by George R. R. Martin
I’m just as shocked as you are that I haven’t read this series yet. I’ve heard mixed reviews so I’m going in cautiously optimistic.

Assassin’s Apprentice
by Robin Hobb
I weirdly have never heard of this series before…? So I apologize to anyone who loves this series and is shocked, sadden, or surprised by my actions. (Blame the 7 years of higher education)

Ghost of the Shadow Market Short Stories #6-8 by Cassandra Clare et al.
  #6 The Wicked Ones
  #7 The Land I Lost
  #8 Through Blood, Through Fire
I somehow fell behind on reading these, and almost decided to not read them and just wait for when the anthology comes out in June, but let’s be honest, I can’t wait that long. I don’t think I’ll do review posts for these since they’re so short, but I will definitely do a review when the anthology comes out.

The Assassin’s Blade (Throne of Glass short stories) by Sarah J. Maas
I also have no idea why I haven’t devoured this yet, but for some reason it hasn’t happened. I’m hoping to change that in December.  If I don’t get to this in December, then definitely January. I might need a Maas breather after I finish Kingdom of Ash.

What I’ve Started

I got a head start on these two because I was avoiding reading Kingdom of Ash, hehe. I’m still in the early stages of both books, but am enjoying them so far. You might think I’m a bit crazy for starting A Game of Thrones right before Queen of Air and Darkness comes out and I probably am 😉 but oh well. Gotta start sometime, am I right?

In theory, I should probably read Six of Crows and Crooked Kingdom to prepare for King of Scars’ release in early January. BUT I’m going to leave Six of Crows and Crooked Kingdom for January since it’s a super long month and with not a lot of book releases coming my way that month, I should be able to breeze through all three fairly quickly.

What are you planning to read this month – new releases, your favorite re-read? Let me know!

Until next time!

    1. I’ve heard really good things about Assassin’s Apprentice, and I have no idea why it’s taken me so long to read it. But yes, SO excited for Queen of Air and Darkness. I’m sure it will be a heart breaker.

  1. Great article! I haven’t read any of the books you mentioned. Although, I did buy One of Us is Lying and we were liars awhile ago and hope to start reading them at some point soon. I haven’t read any of the Outlander books, they seem so long and it would take me forever to finish reading, LoL. I do watch the TV Series on Starz though, and love it! Season 3 was really good!

I read You by Caroline Kepnes over the summer and just recently finished reading the sequel. The Lifetime series adaptation was so good!

Currently reading To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before by Jenny Han. Read about 60 pages so far and it’s really good so far.

    1. I think I’ve seen the first two or three episodes of the Outlander tv show and didn’t mind it, so maybe I’ll just stick to the tv show 😉 If you pick up We Were Liars or One of Us Lying, I would love to know what you thought! I own the e-book of We Were Liars, so I might end up just reading it. I think it was the person who read the audiobook that made it horrible, haha.

I’ve seen previews for the You tv show for a while now but didn’t know it was based off a book, that’s so cool! Might need to read it and then watch the show. 🙂

I recently bought To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before and I think I’m going to read it when Seattle gets a bit colder and rainier. It seems like a perfect cozy read. Have you seen the movie on Netflix? SO GOOD.

  2. I’m such an indecisive reader on what to read next usually but when I read One of Us is Lying and We were liars, I’ll definitely let you know how I like those books.

Omg, You by Caroline Kepnes was probably the best book I’ve ever read. There’s actually a sequel to You called Hidden Bodies. The books were very twisted and very much on the insane side, LoL, but probably the best thrillers I’ve ever read. Kepnes is definitely my favorite author, her books are so good! Definite recommends! The TV adaptation was so well done too!

I haven’t seen the movie yet. For book adaptations most of the time I try to read the book and than watch the adaptation afterwards. But definitely can’t wait to see the movie!
